Pre-wedding sessions have become a way to capture a special memory of the months leading up to the big day while also helping you gradually shed any camera shyness. Although many couples envision these shoots taking place in spring or summer, winter offers a completely different kind of setting.

The light is softer, usually bustling spots tend to be a bit quieter, and the landscapes take on a new look. Forests shed some of their foliage, the sea shifts in tone, and in mountainous areas, fog, low-hanging clouds, or even snow can completely transform a location.

Barcelona and its surrounding province also offer diverse landscapes within a short distance of one another. From historic streets to beaches, forests, and mountains, there are plenty of options for finding a location that truly reflects your personalities.

If you are thinking about planning a winter pre-wedding shoot in Barcelona, these five locations make for a great starting point.

""

1. Barri Gotic and El Born: Winter in the City

Not every pre-wedding shoot has to take place amidst nature. For those who prefer an urban setting, the Barri Gotic and El Born offer the chance to discover a completely different side of Barcelona.

Narrow streets, stone facades, arcades, small squares, and nooks that appear almost by surprise offer a variety of settings within a single walk.

In winter, moreover, clothing can become part of the photographic aesthetic. Coats, scarves, sweaters, and heavier fabrics help create images quite different from those usually associated with a spring or summer pre-wedding shoot.

One option is to approach the session as a walk through the city, without the need to constantly hunt for a specific shot. Entering a plaza, pausing in front of a façade, grabbing a drink at a café, or simply walking around can lead to much more spontaneous photographs.

And if the wedding is to be held later at a country estate or amidst nature, an urban pre-wedding shoot can create an interesting contrast between the two sets of photos.

""

2. Bellmunt Sanctuary, a pre-wedding among mountains

The Sanctuary of Bellmunt is located atop the Bellmunt ridge, at an altitude of 1,246 meters, in Sant Pere de Torelló. Its position offers views of the Vic Plain and various mountain ranges of the Pre-Pyrenees and the Pyrenees.

In winter, the landscape can change completely. Clear days allow you to enjoy views that stretch to the horizon, while fog, low-hanging clouds, or snow create a much more intimate and special atmosphere.

The sanctuary itself notes that its surroundings are a popular destination for professional and amateur photographers – something easily understood given the variety of landscapes it offers.

For a pre-wedding shoot, Bellmunt can be a particularly appealing choice for couples who feel a connection to the mountains and prefer natural-style photographs, away from the more common urban settings.

Furthermore, its proximity to Sant Pere de Torelló makes it a particularly interesting location for couples who will subsequently be holding their wedding in Osona.

""

3. The Garraf coast: the sea is for winter, too

When we think of a photoshoot by the sea, it is easy to immediately picture summer. However, a beach in winter offers a completely different image.

The Garraf coast allows you to get away from Barcelona’s more urban beaches and find settings where the landscape takes center stage.

During the cold months, the absence of the typical summer atmosphere allows one to focus on other elements: the movement of the sea, the wind, the rocks, the changing skies, or the vastness of the horizon.

It also completely changes the couple’s aesthetic. A long coat, a wool sweater, or boots can work perfectly against the seaside backdrop, resulting in photographs that would be hard to capture during the warmer months.

In locations like this, it is worth paying close attention to the weather forecast. A gray day doesn’t have to be a drawback; on the contrary, it can be precisely what gives the photographs their character.

""

4. El Montseny, a pre-wedding session deep in the forest

Winter is also an opportunity to discover the forest in a different way.

In Montseny, the paths, vegetation, leafless trees, dampness, or fog can create especially evocative settings during the colder months.

You don’t need to wait for a lush green landscape to get beautiful photos. In fact, the brown, ochre, and gray tones of winter—combined with the texture of tree trunks and fallen leaves—can create a much more neutral backdrop, allowing the couple to become the true focal point.

A session in the woods also allows for walking and moving naturally. This can be especially helpful for couples who aren’t used to being in front of a camera and prefer to have their photos taken while strolling, talking, or simply enjoying the surroundings.

If the day also turns out to be overcast or somewhat foggy, the landscape can take on an atmosphere completely different from what one would find in the same spot during the spring.

""

5. Colònia Güell, architecture and nature in a single session

To conclude, a location distinct from both the natural landscapes and Barcelona’s historic center: Colònia Güell, in Santa Coloma de Cervelló.

Its streets allow for a blend of architecture, history, and greenery along a single route. The complex preserves numerous architectural details, and the setting of Gaudí’s Crypt incorporates materials such as stone, brick, ceramic, glass, and wrought iron, creating a wide variety of textures.

It is precisely that combination that can make for an interesting winter pre-wedding shoot. The colors of the materials and the architecture work especially well with the softer light of this time of year, yielding photographs with a character quite different from a session set amidst nature.

Furthermore, the tour of Colònia Güell can continue into the pine woods surrounding the church, allowing you to transition from an architectural setting to a natural one without having to travel far.

In this case, before organizing the session, it is advisable to check the conditions regarding the venue. Capturing and reproducing images of the Crypt and certain areas managed by the Consorci de la Colònia Güell requires authorization; therefore, it is recommended to verify beforehand which permits may be needed depending on the type of session..

How to plan a pre-wedding shoot in Barcelona in winter

Choosing the location is important, but during the winter months, there are certain aspects that should be given special consideration.

The first factor is the light. Days are shorter, so it is advisable to plan the session schedule carefully. The late afternoon often offers particularly beautiful light, but it also leaves less margin for error if the session starts late.

It is also a good idea to check the weather forecast and choose clothing suitable for the location. There is little point in being cold throughout the session just to achieve a specific look; a nice coat, a sweater, or a pair of boots can easily be incorporated into the photos.

Nor is it necessary to look for a completely sunny day. Clouds, fog, wind, or even light rain can create a special atmosphere if the photographer and the couple are prepared to make the most of it.

Above all, the location should hold some significance for you. It could be a landscape where you usually escape on weekends, the neighborhood where your story began, a beach you visit year-round, or simply a setting where you feel comfortable.

""

The best location is the one where you can be yourselves

There is no single perfect setting for a pre-wedding shoot in Barcelona. For some couples, it might be a street in the city center, while for others, it could be a tree-lined path or a mountain offering a view of the landscape.

Winter offers the perfect opportunity to step away from some of the most common pre-wedding shoot imagery and take advantage of a time of year with its own unique light, colors, and atmosphere.

And if your wedding is to be held in a natural setting, the pre-wedding shoot can also be an opportunity to seek out a completely different landscape or, conversely, to start connecting with the location where the celebration will take place.

At Mas Redortra, we are surrounded by forests and mountains, very close to some of Osona’s most beautiful landscapes. It is a setting that changes with the seasons, allowing you to experience the months leading up to the wedding while also enjoying the journey itself..
